In coupling of one the oldest forms of advertising with today’s modern technology The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Martin Agency called on Colossal to produce a technically advanced, sky high portrait of the twentieth century master Pablo Picasso. The creation was part of a campaign promoting a collection of the artists work at the VMFA. Painting a legend such as Picasso is an honor and for this project the painter’s skills and patience would be tested. The larger than life master was created by layering “building blocks” of Quick Response Codes. The QR codes were fully functioning and when snapped from below with a mobile phone the viewer was taken to a landing page displaying works from the exhibition and given an offer to purchase tickets directly from their mobile phones. The piece was so striking and wonderfully avant-garde it was applauded by the mainstream media and art community.
